the DIY team...in the news
Jason Ferguson of national alt-weekly zine fame posted a blog about us on the Orlando Weekly's website. Thanks Jason! Check it out here.

New Artist: Mother Night

Mother Night is a band built on British Invasion pop-sensibilities and hardened in the fires of late 90's & early 00's indie rock. Killer hooks, distinct melodies, and danceable beats are at the forefront, but behind the pop sheen is a darker lyrical current of discontent and sorrow that pulls a listener deeper in, giving new meaning to the party bursting out of the speakers. All in all, it’s a deliciously addictive sound that plays like a well crafted dark comedy - fitting for a band named after a Vonnegut novel.

Say Hi to Alias Punch!

Formed in 2008 in Orlando, FL, experimental trio, Alias Punch, brings a new idea of melody and beat. With a wide variety of influences, covering the musical spectrum, Alias Punch digs into the tinkering bin and builds refreshing noise with rebellious nuance. Their sound ranges from a subtle and sophisticated storytelling lullaby to a nervous, hyperactive lesson in anger. Guitarist of Alias Punch, Jasper Bleu, brings along eccentric and carefully chosen melodic twangs that ebb and flow in cosmic connection. Lyricist and bassist, Dusty Mondy entangles you in his off-kilter, creative storytelling and driving vocalizations. His lead style of playing bass dances in and out of nervousness and helps in accentuating his sometimes soothing, sometimes wild vocal range. All of the uncontrollable sound of this peculiar band is woven together by the drums, which are remarkably prominent and evolved. Slow, mesmerizing pulse can erupt into intricate savagery while Arkie Jay throws his arms into sonic speed. Alias Punch has one CD release to date and is currently working on a second and third album, as well as a vinyl EP. The first album, self-titled “Alias Punch,” features songs about Pedro Almodovar (“Dark Habits”), Doug Funny (“Porkchop President”) the band’s hometown (“When You Come to the City”) a soft ditty about the routine of working a dead end job (“The Grinding Hole”), and even a cautionary tale about the dangers of combining painkillers, wine, and LSD (“1,2,3…”). Though their recordings are tasteful, AP’s strength really starts to show in their live performances. Like very few bands around today, Alias Punch exuberates a raw emotional intensity saturated with conviction when onstage.

Say Hi to Chris Hall

theDIYteam would like to welcome our newest member, Chris Hall. Here's a few words from Chris...

"I'm Chris Hall. I play acoustic fun (original singer/songwriter type stuff) at coffee shops and rather than fans I just have a large friendbase. I'm currently half-way through my album "Hit Record" at home, hence the name reading (Chris Hall - Hit Record) in the past tense rather than the pompous declaration that this record has hits. I like puns and wordplay, what can I say. I have a show at Cup O' Soul (Winter Park) on March 27th and an in-store performance at George's Music (Fern Park) on April 17th."

theDIYteam welcomes TeleVCheeseburger

A mystic at heart, Tele embraced at a young age a love for the mind expansive arts and a desire to follow the great "madmen" of our world. After refuting his birth name, Tele V. Cheeseburger was born into endless circumstance, an entity that was free to create and communicate naturally through the gridwork of the arts. A self taught artist, musician, producer, and philanthropist, Tele "Veggie" Cheeseburger specializes in understanding and overstimulating the human condition. His songs create pragmatic tension, silence your anxieties, give you nightmares, drop a hope bomb, send you into oblivion, help you and your friends have fun and most importantly laugh in the stupid face of life and the people who just don't seem to "get it."
Currently recording in his studio, The Borelandome Stratosphere, with his band, The Bluetooth Banned (a ragtag team of true-blues pounding the pulp out), Tele meticulously writes, records, edits, produces, ponders and fixes all the craziness of his scrambled thoughts for his upcoming 6th release "Barter Crystals/Explorations," a raucous journey through an alternate universe where currency is obsolete and exploration is inevitable. On Telethon Veginald Cheeseburger's "Him & Her Hymns" EP, Tele deconstructs the synth sounds of Pink Floyd, gum-pop, windchimes, and tells your parents to shove it. In other EP news, Tele released a split cassette to accompany a tour with Portland, OR's The Ocean Floor. The premise of the split was to mimic the stripped down nature of the tour. Choosing recordings that could be represented from a one person perspective. Along with this tour EP, Tele had just finished his third full length "Hydrophonia," a hi-fi trip into modernica, in which he experiments with (get this!) clean sounding recording, neo-tribalism, euro-pop, and Wendy Carlos-ism.
His second full length album,"Future Frontier" is loosely based on the writings and/or ramblings of prophetic time traveler John Titor, who warns the world of a soon coming new American Civil War and a brief but powerful World War III. The album, set in 2015, depicts a savage and explosive future tonally, while the lyrics reflect on a world once enjoyed and provide situational remedy for "running to the end of the earth."
His debut release, "Beach Party Blast/Quasi Immaculate Deception", is a more light-hearted exposé, ranging from the sounds of calm, distant spirits to the jumpy mischievous nature of poltergiests. Tele, operating under the pseudonym Tele & The Ghost of Our Lord for the project, claims that during the last few days of recording sessions, he was possessed by a ghost of the past, present, and future, who pushed him to finish the album under excruciating conditions and unleash the masterpiece online for free immediately after mixing. Upon completion of the ghosts task, Tele surfaced groggy but more masterful than ever. And while he still holds a grudge with the ghost for leaking the album on the internet, Tele's official comment was "Meh... It's no big deal. The Ghost rips on guitar and it's a pretty top notch record. Plus, he played everything while I get all the credit and the royalty checks! What an idiot!"
Members: Tele "Veggie" Cheeseburger - Guitar/Vocals/Synths/Production Jelly "Earthbang" Bean - Organ/Synth/Vocals Zacaroni "Bologna" Bumblefust - Bass/Vocals Geranamo "Tonto Toronto" Guantanamo - Yelps/Drums
4 releases from home label Gone & Records 1 with the help of Portland, OR's Swim Slowly Records
Telethon has shared the stage and/or toured with many beautiful people: R. Stevie Moore, Ryland Bouchard, Dino Felipe, Snak Truck, The Ocean Floor, Nothingberry Plasma, The Visitations, M. Coast, Elf Power, The Starlight Mints, Mt. Eerie, Unicornicopia, Machinedrum, Kevin Blechdom, Irene Moon, Harry Merry, The Octopus Project & a few others.

New Member: Love Destruction

theDIYteam would like to say hi to one of our newest members, Love Destruction. A few words from the band:

Love Destruction is all about the almighty riff, the groove, the feel, the energy. That certain thing that you can’t quite put your finger on but when you hear it you KNOW it’s there. Love Destruction incorporates the groove of Classic Rock with the Heaviness of Metal and the Rawness and attitude of vintage Punk music. ..And we do this to the beat of a well worn, used and abused gig tested electronic synthesizer cause we’re the type of guys who make lemonade out of lemons.

We spent the last few months laying low, writing new songs and trying out different musical ideas but now we are ready go out and preach our gospel of musical destruction. We got a bunch of songs that we want you to want to hear. We are willing to play just about anywhere as long as we can afford to get there. No stage is too big or too small. We will share the stage with any band regardless of musical genre. So if your band wants to hang and do a show together get in touch with us. We also want to find a human drummer that is able to hang. So any interested parties feel free to contact us. We ain’t got much money but we’re rich in personality.

theDIYteam Welcomes Queen of Hearts

Our newest artist on theDIYteam is Justine Iniego. Justine is 21 years old and fronts the band Queen of Hearts. They just formed in Decemember of 2009.

Queen of Hearts is a three piece featuring drummer Audrey Hernandez, bassist Joe Egan, and Justine on guitar and lead vocals. The band plans to get into the studio sometime within the next 6 months to record a 5 or 6 track EP. Best of luck to the band as they work to establish their name and put together their first album!

Say Hi to Kate Sikora

Kate Sikora's sound has been described as being easy to listen to although far from being "easy-listening." She writes lyrics which are inspired by life, stories, colorful characters, and veer away from traditional "love song". Kate has been writing songs since her childhood in the quiet suburbs of New Jersey. At the age of 18, she began playing venues in New York and New Jersey as the front woman in an experimental rock band, the Fauxmonks. The band broke up amicably in 2001 and Kate continued on to write and play solo. In 2005, Kate Sikora independently released her debut album, "Grace in Rotation." Shortly after, she brought her quirky, straight-talkin, energetic songs with her abroad where she spent the next 4 years making a name for herself in the Japanese music scene. She and her pal, Lindsay Lueders (The Bracelets, Vilorena), began collaboration on their indie folk duo, "The Loyal We" in 2006. They caught the attention of Japanese label, Contrarede, shortly after who will release their debut album, "Homes" on January 20, 2010. Kate continues to perform as 1/2 of the Loyal We while also playing as a solo artist often backed by various Japanese musicians she met and befriended in Tokyo. When the Loyal We went on a brief haitus (Lindsay went back to the U.S), Kate decided to stay in Tokyo to work on new material and recordings with her band (Kishida Yoshinari (drums), Horikoshi Takeshi (bass), Minmin (organ)) Sticking around soon paid off as they were invited to play at the 2009 Fuji Rock Festival on the Rookie-A-Go-Go stage. In September, 2009, "Grace in Rotation" was released in Japan on the Contrarede label. Kate is currently working on her second solo album, returned to the US to reunite the Loyal We and spend time with her family, and will soon head back to the land of the rising sun in preparation for the Loyal We release.
